kickboxing in the military?

I am a civilian and kickboxing enthusiast (muay thai style). I often see clips or pictures of men and women kickboxing (e.g. a guy kicking while someone else holds a kickshield or two women sparring with headgear and gloves) in commercials or newspaper stories about the military. Can someone tell me, Does this type of training really happen in the military? Is it part of basic training? If I, as a civilian, were moving to a part of the country where there were no muay thai classes, would it be possible to somehow locate or network with an instructor in the military for private training, or something like that? Thanks ahead.

1Muay Thai isnt really a fighting style that would applicable to military hand to hand combat. There are some Muay Thai principles that are applicable such as the 11 points of striking ect. "Kickboxing" however becomes somewhat negated when you have large amounts of equipment on you, or when your on the ground. Add in modern weapons/situations and you can see where Muay Thai would be out dated.

I dont know about the US Army but the United States Marine Corps is heavily involved in martial arts in terms of teaching it to Marines MCMAP(Marine Corps Martial Arts Program). They have developed a fighting system that incorporates several different styles and there are some Muay Thai style strikes involved however there is much more ground/grappling training than what you would know as a Muay Thai style fighter. Once again the main difference is that MCMAP is designed for battlefield use, or close combat situations that are realistic.

Often times civilians get involved in martial arts training that is out dated, or that has some type of spiritual significance to them. Civilians often get involved in martial arts to get into shape, or to learn how to protect themselves in a street fight. A hand to hand combat situation in the military is very different than a street fight.

Military hand to hand combat is designed to kill or severely injure your adversary, it is lethal or can very easily become lethal.

I do not know where you would go to have someone teach this to you if you are a civilian. I do not see the purpose in a civilian being taught these types of techniques. Should you use them on the street then you will severely injure someone or perhaps even kill them and more than likely be subject to the criminal justice system.

From: S.E

the us army incorperates bjj in their hand to hand combatives. and yes it is intended to be used in and on a battlefield. we are taught to render the opponent unconcious, and if need be, dead. i just got back from military basic and ait this past june. the combatives program is top notch.
